At Ferguson Truck Center, drive shaft and axle failures are a fairly common repair—but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In this short video, Scott Ferguson explains how these components are actually designed to fail first in order to protect more expensive parts like your transmission or differential. Watch the video or read the full transcript below to learn how this built-in “fuse” can save truck owners thousands in repairs.

Scott Ferguson:
A fairly common failure or repair that’s needed at Ferguson Truck Center is we see broken drive axles. And the drive axle is something that is designed to fail—meaning that the reason why it failed is because of a direct load or a shock put on the drivetrain.
The axle itself was designed to fail first, meaning that by this component breaking, it saves the failure of the differential or transmission from breaking.
This is something that’s engineered by the manufacturers—basically, let’s call it like a fuse in your house. Instead of having a major failure, this item is designed to pop like a fuse and break first, to actually save the customer money.
