Not every transmission issue leads to a major repair bill. In fact, many problems in today’s automatic drivetrains are rooted in something much simpler—faulty wiring or bad electronic signals. In this video, Scott Ferguson walks through a recent example at Ferguson Truck Center, where what looked like a serious transmission failure turned out to be a minor electronic issue. Thanks to the right diagnostic software and the expertise of our technician, Red, the customer avoided a high-dollar repair.

Scott Ferguson:
This particular truck came in with a complaint—transmission issue. This truck has an automatic transmission, not real common in class A trucks, but they’re getting more and more common nowadays.
These drivetrains are so influenced by electronics that many times customers will have a transmission problem and assume it’s a high-dollar repair. But the key to doing a good job is having the right software and electronic diagnostic tools.
One of my techs that specializes in electronics—this is Red—on this particular truck, the diagnosis was a failed speed signal or space signal back to the computer. Red pulled up the software, found that the problem was a speed signal, investigated the circuit, and found that there was just a broken wire.
He made the repair on the wire, just got back from a road test, and now the truck is operating properly. So this repair ended up being relatively inexpensive.
I’d like to have more of our customers remember: don’t panic. A lot of times with these electronics, it’s usually something simple.
